About Toxlens

Evidence-first answers on what is in your everyday products.

Why I started Toxlens

I started Toxlens for a simple reason. I have a young family, and I wanted to know what was actually in the products around them: the cookware, the shampoo, the water, the plastic in the kitchen. Every answer I found was either fear-marketing trying to sell me something, or a shrug. Neither helped me make a decision.

So I started doing the reading myself: the actual studies, the regulatory assessments, the systematic reviews. And I built Toxlens to share it the way I wish someone had shared it with me. A clear verdict first. An honest rating of how strong the evidence really is. The primary sources, linked, so you can check me. And no pretending to be certain when the science is not.

What Toxlens is

Toxlens is an evidence-first guide to low-tox living. The promise is the same on every page we publish, no matter the topic.

You get the verdict first, in plain language. Is it safe, is it not, is the evidence mixed, or is there simply not enough evidence yet? You should never have to read 1,500 words to find out what we actually concluded.

You get an honest evidence-strength rating. A verdict is only as good as what backs it, so we label every conclusion Strong, Moderate, Limited, or Inconclusive based on the kind of evidence available. Human studies and regulatory consensus carry the most weight. Animal and lab studies count, but we never dress them up as human certainty.

And you get the sources, linked. We cite primary research: peer-reviewed human studies, systematic reviews, and assessments from bodies like the Endocrine Society, EFSA, NIEHS, and the FDA. We link to them so you can check our work. We do not cite other blogs as evidence.

That is the whole point of the name. A lens, not a verdict handed down from on high. A way to look at the evidence clearly, so you can make your own call with the real picture in front of you.

What I am, and what I am not

I want to be upfront about what I am and what I am not. I am not a doctor or a toxicologist. I am an independent researcher and editor, and a parent, who grades the evidence against a published methodology and updates it as the science moves.

That framing matters, so I will not soften it. Nothing here is written by a clinician. It is written by someone who reads the primary literature carefully, grades it honestly, and shows his work, with every claim cited so you can check it yourself rather than take my word for it.

Where a topic genuinely needs a clinician’s eye, that is exactly the kind of expert review I am bringing in as Toxlens grows. Independent expert review for the topics that need it is the next trust upgrade on the roadmap. Until it is in place, I am not going to imply it exists. Every page shows who wrote it and the date it was last reviewed, so you always know exactly what you are reading and how fresh it is.

How we make money

Some links on Toxlens are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes our verdict. We rate substances and products on the evidence first, and we pick safer swaps on the same basis, whether or not a program pays us. If the evidence does not support a product, no commission will talk us into recommending it.

A note on what this is

Everything here is information to help you reduce exposure and make your own informed choices. You can read exactly how we reach every verdict on our methodology page, including how we grade evidence and choose sources.

This is not medical advice. We will never tell you to start or stop a medication or treatment. If you have a health condition, talk to your doctor.
